Pilot project
Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare has worked in partnership with Public Health England and NHS England and NHS Improvement to develop an e-learning programme to help embed public health in clinical services.
There has been a growing interest in public health by health and care professionals, and the policy framework is placing increasing priority on prevention, NHS services have traditionally been established to provide specialist treatment rather than prevention.
This e-learning programme is intended to support leaders and service managers to guide their teams through the process of re-designing services to support prevention.
Designed as a 5-step process, the programme provides a practical toolkit of useful resources to help individuals and multidisciplinary teams identify their unique contribution to implement quality improvement initiatives to transform services.
The e-learning content is pragmatic and iterative, recognising the competing pressures on front line teams. The tools and resources highlighted can be useful in more than one stage of the 5-step process and will be inter-dependent with wider improvement initiatives.
Following a successful pilot project to support clinicians to use the toolkit within their own sphere of practice - HEE NW & Midlands will be offering a further programme of support to ensure that even more health & care staff are supported to use the toolkit to inform and shape their own public health and prevention work in practice.
The programme will include group learning and activities over a two-month period, with access to a suite of HEE and PHE resources, to ensure participants public health improvement project is a success. The aim is to support a range of health and care professions to develop population health skills through designing, implementing, testing and evaluating a small-scale health improvement project within their own sphere of practice.
The toolkit Embedding Public Health into Clinical Services is a framework to help inform public health practice in clinical settings; developed as a 5-step process to re-designing services to support prevention.
The programme is open to nurses, midwives, health visitors, specialist nurses, medical professions, allied health professionals, dental professions, pharmacy staff, physician associates across all provider settings and care home managers.
The purpose of the work is twofold:
- To seek valuable feedback from the clinical workforce regarding using the toolkit to inform their own prevention projects and practice.
- The evaluation report collated from user feedback will inform future planning to encourage use of the toolkit and public health practice across professions and sectors.
On the 30th March 2021, the PHPN held the 'Next Steps on your public health journey: Thank you webinar', which took a light hearted look at one colleagues public health journey and a session on writing for publication from the HEE national knowledge management team.
